Our story
A cooperative of Mollina growers turning their grapes into Málaga wines since 1977.
In the 1970s, faced with unfair prices and poor working conditions, 14 farmers from Mollina decided to join forces. They put everything they owned on the line to buy the land, and on 17 May 1977 the Sociedad Cooperativa Andaluza Agrícola Virgen de la Oliva was born: SCAAVO.
In its early years the cooperative sold its wine in bulk to other wineries in the province. In 1984 it joined the Regulatory Council of the Wines of Málaga, and in 1993, thanks to the hard work of its members, Bodegas Carpe Diem was created with its first bottled wines: Gadea Tinto, Montespejo Blanco Joven and the Carpe Diem range. Later on, the cooperative played a key role in the approval of the D.O.P. Sierras de Málaga in 2001.
Tradition kept in oak
In the Bodega Sacristía we look after one of the treasures of Málaga wine: the mother wines of a historic ageing and solera winery from the city of Málaga, with more than 200 years of history. Alongside them stand a new ageing hall holding more than 500 casks and the most modern bottling plant in the province.
High vineyards, hand-picked grapes
Our vineyards lie at around 500 metres above sea level, with a continental climate and about 500 litres of rain a year. We harvest by hand and grow varieties such as Pedro Ximénez, Moscatel, Lairén, Syrah, Merlot and Doradilla, a grape native to Mollina. Part of the vineyard is farmed organically.
A cooperative looking ahead
Today SCAAVO brings together close to 1,200 members and five sections: wine, table olives, olive mill, farm supplies and credit. It is one of the largest wine and olive oil sellers in Andalusia, exports to Europe and the Americas, and holds ISO 22000:2018 certification from AENOR and organic certification from SOHISCERT.
